Clearing clutter of all kinds makes space for what you truly want in life
Every possession occupies an energetic space in our emotional and physical world that can prevent us from living the life we desire. Letting go creates space for the things that really matter - new opportunities, growth, love, and time with those we cherish.
The word clutter comes from the Middle English word “cloteren” which means to form clots and coagulate. I like the way Karen Kingston describes the effect of clutter clearing: “Removing the obstacles to the harmonious flow of energy in your living environment creates more harmony in your life and the space for wonderful new opportunities to come to you.”
So if you’re feeling stuck, out of balance or frustrated at not being able to manifest the life you want, consider doing some clutter clearing. There’s only so much energetic space in your life and if that space is full, there simply isn’t room for new opportunities and desired changes.
Not sure how to begin? Start with an easy room, closet, drawer or shelf and sort items into four piles: trash, donate, keep, not sure. Make a game out of it, see how much you can get done in 10 minutes. Then do another 10 minutes. When you’re done, put the trash bag in the trash bin, the donate bag in the car (so it’s out of the house) and re-visit the “not sure” pile to see if anything else can go. If not, put the items in a box marked with a date to address in a month or two. If you don’t end up fetching something from that box during that time, it’s probably time to let it go.
When I’m decluttering (which has become a weekly habit), I find it helpful to remember that my well-being, happiness, and identity isn’t dependent on keeping certain objects.
